Dangers of Olestra
There were many health issues first connected with the use of olestra in food products. These issues were raised by the FDA and companies were forced to put warning labels on their food in order to try and prevent damage to people’s health. Because of this it is made increasingly difficult to form a case. However in recent years the health warning has become very minimal making lawsuits for this reason relatively simple. Some of the dangers caused by olestra include:
- Olestra contains fatty acid moieties making it easier to dissolve essential vitamins (such as Vitamin D, Vitamin E, Vitamin K, Vitamin A and carotenoids) in the blood stream, causing a loss of nutrients.
- Olestra formulations are known to cause both diarrhea and anal leakage; this can range between people from slightly to very severe.
- An unexpected side effect is that it helps remove dioxins from the body which can prove useful when treating someone with dioxins poisoning, however if the patient is not a sufferer it can cause other health issues.
These complications, although only lethal in severe forms, are suitable requirements to make a case of negligence against an olestra company, although it may be quite difficult to make confident claims of negligence if there are warnings found on the product. Health advisories reserve the right to refuse treatment if you are eating the product out of your own choice yet knowing it can cause complications. These facts could put serious strain on your ability to make a case.
